Detox retreats: what the term really means

In wellness marketing, detox can refer to dietary restriction, fasting, a break from alcohol or an ordinary structured holiday.

At a glance

In wellness marketing, detox can refer to dietary restriction, fasting, a break from alcohol or an ordinary structured holiday. Ask the provider to explain the actual activities and claims behind the word.

Evidence matters

The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health reports limited and low-quality evidence for detox diets and cleanses. Claims to remove unspecified toxins should not be treated as established benefits. Fasting and severe restriction can also cause harm.

Medical detox is different

Withdrawal management for alcohol or other substances is a clinical treatment question. A wellness cleanse, yoga holiday or longevity programme is not a substitute. If withdrawal may be relevant, seek appropriate medical advice before travel or stopping substances.

Better questions to ask

What is the proposed diet? Who checks suitability? Which treatments are optional? What happens if you feel unwell? Look for a clear explanation and informed choice rather than dramatic promises.
